Dharma Drum Gala 2015

On October 17, we held our first ever New Home Dinner Gala in Chinatown, Chicago. Almost 120 guests attended, our highest attendance to-date for a dinner gathering. Among the guests were Venerable Guo Xing (Abbot of Dharma Drum Retreat Center and Chan Meditation Center in New York), Venerable Chang Zhai (Chan Meditation Center), and Mr. Robert Chang of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago.

The evening was MC’d by Angela Lim and Allison Zhang. Performances included drumming and choir singing. The Venerables also gave out gifts to donors who have completed donating $1,000 or more to the New Home Fund. In addition, Master Sheng Yen’s first Dharma Heir, Venerable Chi Chern, donated over 40 pieces of his artwork in support of our New Home Vow – of these, we selected six pieces for auctioning at the Dinner Gala and all six pieces were sold, raising significant fund towards our “Finding a New Home” fund. This auction was MC’d by Melisande Resendiz, whose humorous style added to the excitement of this program.

A “Q&A with Venerable Guo Xing” was also conducted, as interviewed by Iris Wang. The Venerable answered many Dharma and Daily Practice questions, including audience questions. Simultaneous interpretation was provided from Chinese to English, whereby English-speakers wore headsets to listen to the Q&A in translated English in real time. This was the first time our newly-formed Interpretation Team provided this service; we hope providing simultaneous interpretation will help English-speakers feel even more welcome at our events.

We are so grateful to all the dinner guests, all the donors who donated additional fund whether they attended the dinner or not, all the artwork auction buyers, and all the volunteers, performers and teachers!
